A chat room moderator or moderator, as they are also known, has a unique responsibility. They are responsible for making the chat room a safe place to chat. Every day, thousands of people log into the most popular chat sites. The room moderator doesn’t just need to look at what’s being said on the chat lobby page, but if the chat room allows webcams, they also need to click on each individual camera to make sure that publicly broadcasting information in the room is allowed. This particular role is not as easy as many people think. But how do you become a chat mod?
Before being appointed as a moderator, they must apply. The first step in becoming a moderator is that you need to be the conversation in the room you want to monitor. So if you want to moderate a room called “teen chat”, you need to chat in the Teen chat room. You must also ensure that you meet all age requirements before applying. If you are a teenager, you cannot apply for a room intended for people aged 18 and over. The same applies if you are of legal age, you cannot apply for a teenage room. Spend a lot of time chatting in your interested room. Make sure other people know you really well. They can only do that if you have a consistent conversation and engage others in the chat room. It helps if other chat moderators and admins know you. If you can make friends with them, your application will probably be accepted. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the chat room rules and watch other moderators do their job, this will help you when you become a mod.
When you are ready to apply, you need to contact the chat room administrator, if not, contact the site administrator. You can do it by private message or email. Some sites have forums or message boards. Create a nickname, preferably the same nickname you use in the chat room. Once you’ve joined the forums, find the name of the admin of the chat room you want to edit and send them a message. Search the forums as well, because sometimes there is a thread that tells you who to contact and what to include in your application. Do not make a thread or message about the desire for moderation. This is frowned upon. What do you say in your application?
Some important things to mention are your nickname that you use in the chat room. Mention how much time you spend chatting in the room. This shows your activity level. Admins tend to look for those who are most active. Tell them the approximate number of hours you can spend moderating. Don’t lie about the time you can edit for them. Tell them what country you are from. Sometimes they may need people from different time zones to cover different times. And finally, tell them why they should choose you. Why do you stand out from the rest? Do you have experience? What skills do you have that can make you a better mod than your predecessor?
Will you get paid? No. All moderator positions on chat sites are voluntary. You won’t get paid. You help when you have time out of your day. What things does the chat mod do?
A chat mod, as mentioned earlier, is responsible for a specific chat room or side room. They quickly scan the chat room and webcams to make sure everyone is chatting correctly. If you see something that breaks the rules, like someone posting their email address on the main page, you need to issue a few warnings asking the person to stop. Include the person’s name in the warning and tell them what they are doing that is not allowed. Here’s an example: “Tom, stop sending me your email address, it’s not allowed and if you continue I may have to kick you out of this room.” If they persist and you have issued multiple warnings, you can continue to kick the user out. A kick is a temporary suspension. Once a person is kicked, they can no longer enter the chat room until an administrator removes the IP address from the kicked list.
I hope this guide clarifies the issues related to discussion site moderation. Remember that it is not easy, it requires time and patience from you. Don’t expect to join a site today and get a moderator position tomorrow. It just doesn’t work that way. You may have to spend a few weeks to a month before you can submit the application, because if you do it before then, no one will know who you are and your chances of being rejected are almost 100%.
