My Affiliate Marketing Explanation and Top 5 Recommendations

What is affiliate marketing?

As I understand it, affiliate marketing is selling another company’s products and earning commissions on the sales you make. This is completely different from Multi Level Marketing (MLM) or Pyramid Schemes. A lot of people I’ve talked to about what I do think affiliate marketing is the same thing as MLM. I understand the confusion; However, the confusion means that these people do not understand what affiliate marketing is. For example, Amazon offers affiliate opportunities. So if you are selling products on Amazon through your unique link; you would get a reward for it. If the customer requests a refund later, you will likely lose the commission on that sale. The sale of physical products is one-time. Just because you might say 100 sales in one month does not guarantee that you will sell again the next month. This would mean that you would have to constantly keep selling to generate income. You can automate the process by creating your own website, for example through a product review and link. You only need to write a review once; but could make a sale after review months later. With physical products, there is no guarantee that they will have the product you are selling in stock. There may even be delays in delivery, and all of this is out of your control.

Passive, recurring income

In the Amazon example above, all products there are one-time direct sales. However, if you sell memberships online, you will receive a commission for this sale every month. Memberships can be of many kinds, I would use Chess.com as an example. I currently have a paid membership to play chess, do tactical puzzles, go through tutorials – basically access to resources that this company spends a lot of time, money and effort developing. If I sell the membership to someone else, I would receive a monthly commission for that sale. If a member cancels their membership, I would stop earning a commission on that sale. It really is that simple.

This might get confused with MLM. MLM schemes have elaborate ways of tricking you and others into paying to be in a network where people above you earn more than you. They promise recurring income – but that’s on the condition that the pyramid continues to grow. If it stops, the system would not continue and go bankrupt if they meet the promised payments.

Exchange of value

Going back to the Chess.com example – even if there were no sales, I would still be happy with my membership because of the value I get for their monthly membership fee. This is the main difference between legitimate affiliate marketing opportunities and hyped scams. Most affiliate marketing opportunities give you value for money in terms of membership fees. I have personally learned about affiliate marketing from different sites and platforms. That doesn’t mean I’ve made money from all of them. That’s not the goal. The developed knowledge and skills will be valuable to me in the years to come. I can say that I’ve gotten a lot of value from all of the sites listed below – and I still have a lot of work to do with each of them.
